Very good

On the iPad there is sometimes a problem displaying tagged entries. This app is the best way of storing tasks in context with the ability to see them in a consolidated view, with offline access. Edited a year later. The problem with tags persists, so iOS devices cannot reliably use tags to prepare a list of notes before meetings (the lag can be anything between a minute and a day or two). Moreover viewing tasks by “Located in” broke several months ago. I have reported these issues several times to no avail. A problem on both iPad and iPhone. This can be alleviated by using the Shortcuts for such cases. Other than that, an excellent app which is improving, and the laptop version is very much more functional than it was a year ago. Updated: After almost a year, both of these issues remain. However the app is much faster. A furthur update several months later. The tags still lag. Do not rely on this app for preparing for meetings. The ‘Located in” bug was eventually fixed, so it was incredibly frustrating that the whole feature was removed a couple of weeks later. On the other hand, new and useful features are being added every month. The flexibility and integration of the product is unmatched and I personally intend to use it always, despite the many bugs and non-existent support. Recommended but Caveat Emptor!

Idea on phone, play with on tablet, polish on PC

For me, Evernote works like a Remembrall (you know, from Harry Potter - Dumbledore takes memories and drops them into a pan of water so he can look at them later and share them with other people). I can jot down ideas on my phone - voice notes, photos, lists, etc - then play around with the ideas informally on my tablet whether I’m at home or not. Then, when I’m in serious work mode, write them up in a proper format for presentation. There are other cloud services available but, once you’ve got a work one and a special interest one, it can get confusing and it runs out of space. And it then asks you to sign away all rights to your content so AI can learn (please don’t do that, Evernote, because I’ll have to leave). Evernote’s functionality has increased over the last few years so I probably haven’t kept up but being able to organise in notebooks, make notes on the dashboard, search, etc is brilliant. Oh yes, and clipping off websites is brilliant too - instead of trying to manage bookmarks in your browser, just clip the whole thing or save the link. I should make more use of the timer/reminder and look at more detailed functions. Any way (this feels like a letter to my aunt) I love Evernote and it’s revolutionised my efficiency from remembering what I wanted to say at book group to making a quick screenshot of what’s on at the cinema to preparing for a work presentation. Try it.

Update to previous review. New updates are terrible

This used to be the best app on the market but recent updates have ruined it. Has become really buggy now can’t easily export photos or documents from a note without it copying a whole load of hyperlink file path details. Now have to save a photo back to my iPhone image library and export from there so way less efficient for the tasks I use it for. Still no barcode recognition which would be very useful and I’ve asked for it many times. Would also be nice to be able to encrypt an entire note from within the phone or pc app. Still an amazing database but was better before the updates.
—————————————————————————
I’ve used this to collate teaching notes for at least 10 years now. It’s so intuitive and easy to use. I upgraded to a pro account when I started incorporating a lot of HD photos into my notes. The “scanning function” on the phone app is just amazing it will recognised a document or sketch when you hover your phone camera over it and remove all the shadows. Searching notes even recognises words within handwriting and scanned documents. It’s the best app on earth, end of story and I haven’t even scratched the surface of what Evernote can do!
